Smart Lobsters
Proverbs 21:24
Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
Do spiny lobsters know that they are a delicacy to many, if not most, of the carnivores on earth? New research into the social habits of spiny lobsters shows that much of their interaction with each...

Life on Ocean Worlds?

Psalms 147:4
“He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names.”

I recently talked about ideas concerning a possible planet-covering ocean on Enceladus—one of the moons of Saturn. There are other moons of Saturn and Jupiter thought to be covered by similar ice-crusted oceans. The reason why such findings excite evolutionists, is that they think these oceans might contain Ocean hydro-thermo ventshydro-thermal vents, like those found on Earth.

The Ocean of Enceladus

Psalms 147:4
“He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names”.

Could the stuff of science fiction be a reality in the outer reaches of our Solar System? As a boy, I read two scifi novels, which proposed that the planet Venus was covered in ocean; Lucky Starr and the Oceans of Venus, by atheist writer Isaac Asimov (published in 1954 under the pseudonym Paul French) and Perelandra (1943), Planet in spaceby Christian writer C.S. Lewis.

Death of a Comet

Psalm 8:3
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

Comets are fascinating things. Although there are a lot of them out there in our night sky, the overwhelming majority of them are insufficiently bright to see with the naked eye. But every so often, a comet appears, which is bright enough to see during the night, and sometimes bright enough even to see during the day.

Goldilocks and the Wolf Star

Genesis 1:16b
… he made the stars also.

In a previous Creation Moments, we talked about the Circumstellar Habitable Zone, or CHZ, which is a region around a star, where astronomers think that water is likely to be in liquid phase. This zone, not too hot and not too cold, is sometimes called the Goldilocks Zone.

Where Are You, Goldilocks?

Isaiah 45:18
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Secular astronomers have defined a region around each star as the Circumstellar Habitable Zone. It is in this zone that it is assumed that life as we know it, Jim, could exist. The closer a planet is to its star, the higher its average temperature would be, unless there are other factors (like the runaway Greenhouse Effect on Venus).

The Faithful Witness in the Sky

Genesis 1:16
“The lesser light to rule the night...”

The Moon has always fascinated me, as it hangs there in the sky, the only extra-terrestrial world where some of its surface features can be seen with the naked eye.

How Would You Know There Is Life Out There?

Romans 1:19
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

There are those who are searching for life in outer space. Such groups include SETI – the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. But supposing they received a signal from outer space. How would they know, if it was really an intelligence? In 1967, scientists at Jodrell Bank in England picked up regular pulses of radio signals, and they assumed that the signals must be intelligent in origin.

Moon Puzzle

Psalm 148:3
"Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you stars of light!"

Our moon is moving away from the Earth at the rate of four centimeters per year. That might not seem like much. However, that rate of movement away from the Earth presents problems for those who believe the Earth and moon have been around for 4.5 billion years.

A Trail that Tells a Tale

Psalm 19:1
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork."

Two rocks float through silent space, unaware that they will soon cause a scientific debate millions of miles away on Earth. On Earth, these two small asteroids added together may weigh only a few hundred pounds. However, the conclusions that can be drawn from them might be weighty enough to overthrow a powerful theory.

Big Bang Boom?

1 Corinthians 15:41
"There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory."

The Big Bang theory holds that in the very early stages of our universe, there were few galaxies, and they were small by today's standards. In this theory, no star can be older than its home galaxy.

Fresh Dust?

1 Corinthians 15:40
"There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another."

The last few years have seen a good deal of excitement among astronomers over the possibility of discovering planets orbiting distant stars. Astronomers are looking at stars that are surrounded by disks of dust and debris.

Warning: Space Travel May Be Hazardous to Your Health

1 Peter 5:8
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour…"

From 1961 to 1972, the Apollo space program captured the world's attention with its 11 manned flights into space, its tragedies and its triumphs. Though the program is best remembered for the failed mission of Apollo 13, NASA succeeded beyond measure when it landed a man on the moon in 1969.

Looking for Life in All the Wrong Places

Jeremiah 29:13
"And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."

Several years ago I read a short story about three friends sitting around a campfire discussing whether life on other planets would ever be found. Two of them believe in life on other planets, but one disagrees. He insists that God created life on their planet alone. As the conversation continues, one of them sees that the fire is dying out, so he stirs the smoldering embers with a stick he is holding in his third green tentacle!

The Goldilocks Zone

Genesis 8:22
"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

I'm sure you remember the fairytale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Goldilocks tries to eat papa bear's porridge but finds it too hot. So she turns to a second bowl, and it's too cold. Finally she discovers a third bowl of porridge and finds it to be just right, so she eats it all up.

Did Noah's Flood Affect Mars, Too?

Genesis 7:11
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life ... were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

One of the biggest headlines in planetary exploration in recent years was the confirmation that at one time Mars had water. Further exploration and study reveals evidence that there was once quite a lot of moving water on the surface of Mars.

Homer May Have Been Smarter than We Thought

Psalm 147:4
"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names."

Homer, the blind Greek poet, spoke of Odysseus's return to Ithaca and describes some astronomical events that seldom happen in the order he describes. Yet, the setting of the events he writes about took place 400 years before it is thought Homer lived.

NASA's Glory Has Departed

1 Samuel 4:21
"And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband."

Some of you listening to me today are too young to remember the glory days of NASA – when the U.S. space agency put a man into Earth orbit and, a few years later, on the surface of the moon. NASA had brains and guts in those days – as evidenced by the remarkable story of Apollo 13 … or when astronauts weren't afraid to read passages from Scripture in their transmissions from space.

Solving the Distant-Starlight Dilemma

Isaiah 45:12
"I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded."

Scientists who reject the Bible believe that man's ability to see light from distant stars and galaxies can be likened to a deadly torpedo that sinks the ship of young earth creationism. But they are not taking into consideration that there are many possible solutions to how light from distant stars could reach the Earth very quickly.

Scientists Recognize that We Have a Designer Earth

Isaiah 45:12
"I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded."

Evolutionists often claim that evolution can produce living things that look as if they are designed. This is their way of answering arguments that things that look designed don't need a Designer. However, in January of 2000, a paleontologist and an astronomer teamed up to publish a book that says that conditions on Earth are so unique, there is probably no other life like us in the universe. (We do need to keep in mind, however, that they write from an evolutionary perspective.)

The Faint Sun Paradox

Genesis 1:16
"Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also."

Let's assume for a moment that the evolutionary explanation for the origin of the Earth and sun is correct. The sun formed about 4.6 billion years ago. Let's imagine that evolutionists are right in saying that life originated on Earth about 3.5 billion years ago. This scenario creates many scientific problems, but today we want to focus on one problem that is seldom mentioned.
