The Stars Died

Psalm 8:3-4
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

The atheist physicist Lawrence Krauss believes he has life figured out. As a cosmologist, he adheres to the Big Bang view of origins, believing that the universe came into existence from a singularity about 13.7 billion years ago.

Planet Nine

Psalm 8:3-4
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

When I was a boy, there were nine planets. I remember reports in 1982 about the discovery of a tenth planet. Nobody actually saw the alleged tenth planet through a telescope. However, measurements were made of the orbits of other planets, and Image: Artist impression of Erisperturbations from where they thought the orbits should be were noted. It was assumed that these perturbations were caused by a large planet beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Pluto

Psalm 8:3-4
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Do you feel sorry for Pluto? It isn’t a planet anymore.

Of course, you might want to point out to me that this is old news. Pluto was reclassified in 2006, being downgraded to the new category of dwarf planet. Thus, the Solar System went back to being a collection of eight planets, just as it had been before the discovery of Pluto in 1930.

A Convention of Light

Genesis 1:16-18
And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

If you fire a beam of laser light at the Moon, how long will it take to get there?

At first, some might suggest that this is a relatively easy Artist rendering of light traveling.problem. Speed equals distance divided by time, so surely we can calculate how long the light will take. But do we really know how fast the light travels from Earth to Moon? Creationist astrophysicist Dr. Jason Lisle suggests that we don’t.

Life on Mars for Real

Genesis 8:22
While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

David Bowie sang:

Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Curiosity for Life on Mars

Isaiah 45:18
“For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

Like many people of my generation, I was fascinated by the Apollo Moon landings from 1969 through 1972. As a small boy, I keenly watched all the special programs that I could on BBC TV. I Space exploration roverclearly remember one of the BBC experts, signing off the Apollo 17 broadcast, by telling us that NASA would certainly have people on Mars before 1990. I waited eagerly, but it never happened.

Aging Stars

Genesis 1:16b
“…he made the stars also.”

Today, I want to talk about aging stars. But I am not referring to your favorite movie icon of yesteryear. Instead, I am talking about stars in the universe.

How old is a star? And how can we tell?

Making an Impact

Psalm 8:3-4
“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”

The Solar System has seen many impacts. On so many bodies of the Solar System, these impacts have produced craters. It is well known that the surface of the Moon contains many craters, which are thought to have been formed when a meteorite hit the Lunar Meteor cratersurface. However, the Moon is not alone.

The Heavens Declare

Psalms 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.“

I often think that all Christians should be interested in astronomy. That does not mean that I think you should be experts in how stars work, or how light travels. But the Psalmist says that “the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky Artist rendering of the galaxyabove proclaims his handiwork”.

Is the Earth Flat?

Psalm 113:3
"From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD's name is to be praised."

Since starting these broadcasts, I have received a number of surprising emails, from people who claim to believe that the Earth is flat, instead of spherical. Is the idea of a spherical earth a lie Drawing of the Map of the Square and Stationary Earthfed to us as if it were true, along with evolution and deep time? No.

The Big Fizz

Genesis 1:14-15
"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so."

Many secular cosmologists believe that the universe came into existence in a singularity, as a result of a quantum event about 14.7 billion years ago. However, this so-called Big Bang theory is not without its problems. Principle among these is the Horizon Representation of Big Bang and InflationProblem, which refers to the fact that Big Bangers cannot account for the Cosmic Microwave Background being the same temperature in all directions.

Echoes of a Big Bang?

Genesis 1:6-8
"And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day."

Outer space has a temperature. It has become common to think of space as a vacuum, that has nothing in it, which means it would be at absolute zero temperature. In fact, space is nearly a The binary star system Rho Ophiuchi.vacuum, but not quite. And the particles in that near vacuum are in motion, so they have a temperature of 2.73K—the equivalent of 2.73 Celsius degrees above Absolute Zero.

What Does the Milky Way Say About Evolution?

Job 22:12
"Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!"

When we look at the size of the universe, it sometimes becomes easier to see evolution as credible. After all, when we see galaxies that are said to be billions of light years away, it seems Milky Waypossible that there really have been millions of years. But, in truth, the immensity of space is really not so friendly to evolution's claim that the universe, and the earth, are billions of years old.

Dusty Stars

Genesis 1:16
“And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

The news has again been filled with stories about the search for planets orbiting nearby stars. All these stories assume that our Earth was not formed by God. They perpetuate the idea that the Artist's impression of dust around Beta PictorisEarth and other planets in the solar system formed when dust around the young sun began to collect into lumps.

Life on Ocean Worlds?

Psalms 147:4
"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names."

I recently talked about ideas concerning a possible planet-covering ocean on Enceladus – one of the moons of Saturn. There are other moons of Saturn and Jupiter thought to be covered by similar ice-crusted oceans. The reason why such Underwater ventsfindings excite evolutionists, is that they think these oceans might contain hydro-thermal vents, like those found on Earth.

The Ocean of Enceladus

Psalms 147:4
"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names."

Could the stuff of science fiction be a reality in the outer reaches of our Solar System? As a boy, I read two sci-fi novels, which proposed that the planet Venus was covered in ocean: Lucky Starr Planet in spaceand the Oceans of Venus, by atheist writer Isaac Asimov (published in 1954 under the pseudonym Paul French) and Perelandra (1943), by Christian writer C.S. Lewis.

Death of a Comet

Psalm 8:3
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

Comets are fascinating things. Although there are a lot of them out there in our night sky, the overwhelming majority of them are insufficiently bright to see with the naked eye. But every so often, a comet appears, which is bright enough to see during the night, and sometimes bright enough even to see during the day.

Goldilocks and the Wolf Star

Genesis 1:16b
… he made the stars also.

In a previous Creation Moments, we talked about the Circumstellar Habitable Zone, or CHZ, which is a region around a star, where astronomers think that water is likely to be in liquid phase. This zone, not too hot and not too cold, is sometimes called the Goldilocks Zone.

Where Are You, Goldilocks?

Isaiah 45:18
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Secular astronomers have defined a region around each star as the Circumstellar Habitable Zone. It is in this zone that it is assumed that life as we know it, Jim, could exist. The closer a planet is to its star, the higher its average temperature would be, unless there are other factors (like the runaway Greenhouse Effect on Venus).

The Faithful Witness in the Sky

Genesis 1:16
“The lesser light to rule the night...”

The Moon has always fascinated me, as it hangs there in the sky, the only extra-terrestrial world where some of its surface features can be seen with the naked eye.
