Today's Creation Moment

Were Dinosaurs Warm Blooded?
Psalm 147:2-3
"The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel. He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds."
Dinosaur fossil hunters and paleontologists have long debated whether dinosaurs were warm-blooded or cold-blooded. With reptile characteristics, it was expected that dinosaurs would be cold-blooded....

Early Geology and the Flood

Genesis 7:19-20
“And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered

John WoodwardThere is a myth perpetrated by some that Flood Geology is an invention of the 20th Century, not supported, except implicitly, by geologists of earlier eras. This is not the case. One man who can prove this myth to be false is John Woodward, a contemporary of Isaac Newton.

Everyone Loves Bacon

Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

Sir Francis BaconEveryone loves bacon; or maybe every scientist loves Bacon. The Bacon to which I am referring is Sir Francis Bacon, later Viscount St. Alban, 1561-1626. It is to him that we owe a debt of thanks for the introduction of an early scientific method.

Isaac Newton – Historian

Daniel 2:21
“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:”

Isaac NewtonIn another Creation Moment, we discussed the fact that the famous scientist and mathematician Isaac Newton believed Genesis to be a true book. We would probably not want to follow Newton’s theological beliefs, given that they were Arian in nature, but it is not often realized that Newton wrote extensively on the subject of history.

Isaac Newton – Creationist or Heretic?

Exodus 20:11
“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Isaac NewtonIt surely is not possible to learn science without coming across the name of Sir Isaac Newton, one of history’s greatest scientists. While many scientists concentrate on one field of study, Newton is famous for three: light, calculus, and gravity.

The Souls of Haran

Genesis 12:5
“And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came

colored drawing of Biblical peopleIn Genesis 12:5, we read about Abram leaving Haran. Among his party were people acquired in Haran, as the NKJV, ESV, and CSB versions put it. The KJV and the earlier Geneva Bible refer to the ones taken from Haran as “the souls that they had gotten in Haran”. The Hebrew word being translated here is nephesh – a word that refers to the breath of life; an in-pouring of the Spirit.

One Genesis Book

Genesis 12:3
“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

Image: Man walking down path leading to a wooden crossGenesis is one book. That might seem pretty obvious to many of you, and yet sometimes we have given the impression that it is two books. The first book runs from chapter one through chapter eleven. The second is from chapter twelve onward.

Neumann Valley

Genesis 2:7-8
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.”

Joachim NeumannJoachim Neumann was born in 1650 in Bremen, in what is today part of Germany. His father was a teacher of Latin. Joachim grew up in the Reformed Calvinist Church in Germany. At 16, he studied theology at home, being too poor to go to university. Shortly before he finished his course, in 1670, he heard a sermon which changed his life.

Evolutionary Scientists Find a Surprise!

Matthew 24:44
“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not expect Him.”

Painting: Passenger PigeonAccording to the Bible's history, human beings were created perfectly by God about 6,000 years ago. We should note that this means we were not only morally perfect, but genetically perfect as well. According to evolutionists, our ancestors split off from the monkeys millions of years ago. Both viewpoints agree that each generation of human beings adds mutations to the ongoing human gene pool.

A Snowball's Chance

Job 38:22-23
“Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?”

Image: GlaciaWe are all familiar with the concept of the Ice Age – probably due to the eponymous cartoon feature film series. Evolutionists believe that this event took place about 2.6 million years ago. There is considerable evidence around the world of valleys carved by glaciation, and glacial moraines – deposits of rocky debris left at the end of glaciers.

Hurricanes: Are They Our Fault?

Psalm 55:6-8
“And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest. Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah. I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.”

Image: weather photo of a hurricane. One leading left-wing UK newspaper headlined a report on Hurricane Harvey with these words:

"It's a fact: climate change made Hurricane Harvey more deadly."

The Floodwaters Rise

Genesis 7:11-12
“In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.”

Image: Noah's ark in a stormImagine that the tide went out much farther than it had ever done before. Imagine that you lived in a world full of evil, but this day it seemed like something big was about to happen. One man and his family had been building an enormous vessel while warning people of the coming judgment of God. You had joined in the laughter with everyone else.

The Gods Who Did Not Create

Jeremiah 10:11
“Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.”

Image: The Golden CalfOne of the fundamental lessons we learn from Scripture is that there is only one God. There are, however, a lot of false gods. In biblical times, these would often have been idols of wood, stone, or metal. But there are idols all around us today which demand our worship. These could be anything that people have put in the place of God.

Covered with Pitch

Genesis 6:14
“Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.”

Image: Pitch in a containerThe Ark was made of wood, so it had to be waterproofed. The most suitable type of waterproofing would be a hydrophobic substance, such as oil or grease. So it was coated inside and out with pitch. But what actually is pitch? In modern parlance, this refers to an oil fraction. But here some people raise a problem. If pitch is an oil fraction, then do we not assume that oil was produced during the Flood?

Fountains of the Deep

Genesis 7:11-12
“In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.”

Image: Noah's ark in the floodThe Flood began with two geophysical events – the bursting forth of Fountains of the Great Deep and the opening of the Windows of Heaven. But what could these events have actually looked like?

Don't Take This Literally

2 Timothy 3:16-17
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

Image: University of BirminghamThe Bible’s authority is constantly questioned, and so-called scholars constantly attempt to undermine it. As I write this, a new attempt is being made to undermine people’s trust in God’s word.

The Miners’ Car

Psalm 75:2-3
“When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly. The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah. “

Image: Crushed carThree people went out to dig for rock. The rocks in their claim were rich in minerals, such as malachite – the principle ore of copper.

Adam’s Attitude

Genesis 3:6
“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”

Image: Illustration of Adam in GardenIt is impossible for us, 6,000 years later, to get into the mind of the first man. For a start, he was created perfect, and we have no idea what it is like to be perfect or to have a perfect mind. Then again, given that he was perfect, we have difficulty in understanding why he would deliberately choose to disobey God and eat the fruit.

James Ussher’s Legacy

2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The years between 1639 and 1651 were times of great turbulence in the British Isles as a series of deadly conflicts were played out. James Ussher was right in the middle of these events, being Image: Armagh Cathedralborn, as he was, in Dublin in 1581. In a previous Creation Moment, we related Ussher’s precocious childhood, that led to his famous calculation of the date of creation as 4004 BC.

James Ussher’s Education

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it

James Ussher is famous, or infamous, depending on your point of view, for his work on creation. It was Ussher who calculated that the Earth was created at 6 pm on the evening before October 23rd 4004 BC. Because of his exactness in choosing this date, he has Image: James Ussherbeen criticized and held up for ridicule in recent years.

Abandoned at Coldwater

Psalm 23:1-2
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Coldwater Lake in Washington State looks so pretty, nestled between the mountains. This scene of tranquility is very popular among the fishing community.
