So many people today want the gospel message to be a personal smorgasbord from which they can pick and choose. They like the idea that the Lord loves them unconditionally, so they accept that, even though the Lord has made it clear that there are conditions. Repentance and obedience to his laws are required. But lots of people don't like that, so they just keep on thinking that the Lord is going to make up for what they lack when they don't even bother to keep his commandments.

If we really kept the law — which is to love the Lord with all our hearts, might, and souls — we wouldn't be so focused on getting exactly what we want. Instead, we would be focused on what the Lord wants. That's really what matters after all.
