Your comment "Choosing the approval of god or man ... [is] the heart of this debate" is right on. Some years ago in the Grand Rapids Press, Howard Van Til from Calvin College stated that he had spent his entire career trying to earn the respect of the secular academy. We know what he chose. A few years after that he retired from Calvin and appeared at the West Michigan Freethinkers where he accepted out and out atheism.
