John 21:25

and as far as his story being picked up at age 30... you must have not started reading from chapter 1.

@ the main topic: religion is dangerous in that people have a tendency to settle into complacency, establishing a tradition of "dead" religion and do not continue to examine the Scriptures with a childlike mindset. They rely on their preachers to explain the Word to them and then their daily Bible reading becomes a "crutch" to support what the preachers have told them instead of searching for what the Word of God actually says.

Acts 17:11
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

In the end, though, I think that the main argument probably has to do with each person's own perspective of the connotation or definition of the word "religion".
