Hooked on a Feeling?

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has said, "God is a feeling experience, not a believing experience." Think about that for a moment. Where does truth come from – from inside ourselves or from outside? Feeling puts the focus inside. Believing puts the focus outside.

The world bombards us today with all kinds of false philosophy – including the just-so-stories of evolution. The bombardment takes its toll because a lie told often enough becomes believed truth. For example, "The fossils found on this ridge were part of an underwater sea which existed 400 million years ago." Oh really?

Do people stop to think about the basis for such a claim? Could it actually be a feeling of intellectual pride which resists assumptions from the Bible, preferring instead assumptions that leave God out? We think so.

Feelings are all over the place. They are unreliable. We can choose whichever assumptions we feel like to base our belief upon. If the Bible is not held up as the standard of truth, then truth becomes defined by the feelings of individuals. Your truth is your truth, my truth is my truth. We can choose to believe that everything came from chance and natural selection. Or we can believe that God is our Creator.

If our Creator cares about His creation, doesn't it make sense that He has made available His Manufacturer's Handbook (a.k.a. the Bible) in which He has told us much about His creation?

That Handbook tells us, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved…" (Acts 16:13). In other words, put your trust in an external and wonderful reality which transcends the feelings of any human being. Sorry, Oprah. We believe in Jesus because He truly is the Way, the Truth and the Life … not because He is a "feeling experience".

Photo: Don't believe everything you're told or even everything you see. This isn't Oprah. It's a wax figure in a museum. But you can believe everything you read in the Bible.
