Most of the high mountains were formed during the year-long flood after the earth had been covered with water and all life destroyed. As the earth broke up and the continents started to form as tectonic plates moved and land masses slammed into each other, mountains like Everest and Ararat were formed. After the waters receded, the ark then settled on Ararat.
