This is just my humble opinion, but the dog's ears are perfectly designed. First of all, they hear better than humans. And, in regards to the 90 degree turn of the ear canal, it probably prevents more trauma to the ear drum than a straight ear canal like humans. Just think of how they ambulate: head first. Not only do they have that extra protection for the ear drum, but they also have third eyelids to protect their eyes.
However, dogs can get infections and parasites that can be quite annoying for both pet, owner, and veterinarian. People get ear infections, too.
