It's all relative - how modern culture is now turning truth into a lie!

Viewpoint of Mark Cadwallader, Creation Moments Board Chairman

When I visited an old college roommate recently, it was like neither one of us had changed in all those years. Though each and every cell in our bodies had been replaced many times over the years, we were the same basic personalities!

Think about it, there is preserved in us an identity which transcends our material composition. Paul Weiss says it this way, “Even though I know I am constantly changing – all molecules are changing, everything in me is being turned over substantially – there is nevertheless my identity, my consciousness of being essentially the same that I was 20 years ago – or 50 years ago. However much I may have changed, the continuity of my identity has remained undisrupted.”

The Bible is true when it describes human beings as a unity of body, soul, and spirit – not just body. This is quite contrary to what the secular humanists and others who subscribe to the philosophy of naturalism want us all to believe. Of course they push an acceptance of evolution to try to uphold their philosophy.

The Bible is true when it talks about a unity of truth – established for all time and space by its Creator – that goes beyond the physical. Moral truth and spiritual truth are just as true as material, or scientific, truth. Neurophysiologists admit that there is no direct relationship between a fragment of memory and a nerve cell. So here is another area where evolution has great difficulty. Humanists, Marxists and Postmodernists, for example, who all subscribe to a philosophy of atheistic naturalism, have real problems explaining our “unity of identity” and the memory of who we are.

The Bible is also true when it describes a creation and a human nature inherently flawed as a unit, materially and spiritually, because of Adam and Eve’s decision to disobey God in the Garden of Eden. There is thus a spiritual and a material disorder in the universe – part of that unifying truth that comes from our Maker through the Bible.

But what has happened in our modern era is that the unifying truths of the Bible, of Christianity, have been discarded for a two-tiered view of truth. It was described in the 1970s by the late Francis Schaeffer. Truth, he maintained, has become no longer a unity but is separated into two classifications – either Facts or Values.

Science, for example, is viewed as fact. Therefore, evolution is considered fact. Values, since they are not considered facts, are all relative to individuals and cultures and therefore are simply relative. Religion is relegated to a “value”. Therefore, God is merely a value.

This is why our institutions have arrived at the ridiculous notion that evolution is more factual than God! Furthermore, since morals are considered “values”, morality is perceived as “relative”, and therefore inappropriate as the basis for modern law.

No longer do we have a society where a unity of truth is accepted – one which comes to us from a biblical worldview. Society now accepts truth as a principled thing only when it comes to science and technology. But when it comes to values and morality, it is all relative to individuals and cultures. What’s true for you is true for you, and what’s true for me is true for me. The fact/value dichotomy subtly and thoroughly tells people that “values” should not be regarded as true, but rather regarded as the expressions of opinionated individuals. This divided concept of truth is arguably the most important feature of the secularism of Western Society.

Here again is why Creation truth is fundamentally important. With all things being created by a transcendent God, all truth forms a single, coherent, mutually consistent system. Truth is unified and universal. And that’s the TRUE truth that you help proclaim through Creation Moments!

I’m sure you’ve heard of award-winning Christian author Nancy Pearcey. What you probably don’t know is that she wrote articles for Creation Moments back when we were called the Bible Science Association. Building on the insights of Francis Schaeffer, she writes, “The only way to drive out bad culture is with good culture.”

There is a great deal of evidence for biblical creation and for the truth of the Bible. And we see it everywhere – as I did in the “the unity of identity” that I experienced when my soul became reacquainted with the soul of my old roommate. We are not just chemicals – bags of enzymes, as my old organic chemistry professor would say. We are spirit, soul and body, as the Bible says! Materialism is limited. Naturalism is limited. That’s why it makes much more sense to go back to a Supernatural Creator – who created “ex nihilo” through His spoken Word, exactly as the Bible says.

Thank you for standing with us for biblical truth! The Spirit of God uses such truth in amazing ways to connect with people all over the world.
