Judgment by God or by Nature?
Viewpoint of Mark Cadwallader, Creation Moments Board Chairman
We are living in an unprecedented time of aggressive atheism and mockery from those who hate God and those of us who believe in biblical truth!
Clearly, the May 21 prediction of Judgment Day was misguided (…of that day and hour knoweth no man… Matthew 24:36). I find it ironic, though, that secularized modern men mock all of God’s judgments while accepting and even constructing government policy on predictions of “Nature’s” judgments. Indeed, with global warming, pseudo-science has given rise to pseudo-prophecy.
“Official” global warming hysteria, for example, has led to predictions such as that by the United Nations not too long ago that by the end of the decade (2010) there would be 50 million environmental refugees due to the results of global warming (rising sea levels, etc). Places most at risk, according to a handy U.N. map from 2005, included low-lying islands in the Pacific and Caribbean as well as coastal cities in China, the U.S. and elsewhere. Yet, census data reveal that far from seeing an exodus of people, such places are growing, with many of them among the fastest-growing regions of the world. Needless to say, the U.N. has quietly removed the predictions from its website.
And when Nobel Laureate Al Gore received yet another award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006 for his propaganda “shock-umentary” An Inconvenient Truth, he gave an acceptance speech in which he predicted that “the world has 10 years or less to turn things around before it is too late.” Well, we have five years left with Gore’s prediction of global-warming catastrophe. (Of course, global-warming alarmists now use “climate change” because, while global warming is highly arguable, who can argue that the climate does not change?)
With evolutionism, pseudo-science has taken the place of God in our secular culture. Somehow, carbon dioxide – arguably the key substance in the cycle of life on earth – has become a pollutant that is officially injurious to health! The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), by authority of a Supreme Court ruling in 2007, declared it as such. Such a declaration gives the EPA the authority to regulate nearly everything and everyone – and they seem to be in a hurry to do so before too much opposition mounts. Not only has the global-warming agenda become the featured concern for “Cap and Trade” of “carbon credits”, but it has crept into other less-controversial environmental policies as well, such as “Sustainable Development”.
True air pollutants – such as particulate matter, non-completely burned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen – are nearly all removed from car exhausts by such devices as catalytic converters. So it’s as if the EPA has a self-perpetuating momentum to grow itself when it moves into the regulation of carbon in general, being co-opted by the global-warming crowd to further regulate, control and redirect money on behalf of special interests. As Creation Moments has pointed out before, global warming – especially after the “Climategate” scandal – has all the signs of a classic pseudo-science promoted by fraud, opportunists and bullies – just like evolution!
A blockbuster Hollywood movie, 2004’s The Day After Tomorrow, popularized the potential for an environmental judgment day based on global warming pseudo-science. Its plot was classic science fiction horror – that global warming causes the Gulf Stream to shut down, prompting a severe storm the likes of which has never before been seen, resulting in a killer change in global climate.
Believing the whole Bible as creationists do, we are aware of God’s historical divine judgments – and they are indeed historical! For example, the judgment against sin in the Garden of Eden with the resulting curse of death and decay, or the judgment of Noah’s Flood on a world given over to demonic “evil continually” (Genesis 6:4-5), leading to a radically different world. In fact, creationists know the Bible prophecies that men will be “willingly ignorant” of the judgment of the antediluvian world, scoffing at and mocking any reference to the Lord’s return (2 Peter 3:3-6).
As Bible-believing people, we should also be aware that God’s judgment connotes rewards as well as reproofs and punishment. “Glory” awaits the believing Christian, and there will be a wonderful, incredibly beautifying transformation – “metamorphosis” in the Greek – connected with God’s judgment.
C.S. Lewis – in his classic essay “The Weight of Glory” – wrote: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. … It is immortals whom we joke with, marry, snub, and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.”
Lewis also wrote, describing the great day, “In the end that Face which is the delight or terror of the universe must be turned upon each of us either with one expression or the other, either conferring glory inexpressible or inflicting shame that can never be cured or disguised. …The promise of glory is the promise, almost incredible and only possible by the work of Christ, that some of us, that any of us who really chooses, shall actually survive that examination, shall find approval, shall please God.”
At Creation Moments, our earnest desire is that we should all obtain a beaming and glorious look of acceptance and approval from the Face of our Creator. Lewis writes that our reaction, though much more magnified, will be similar to the joy and delight of an infant looking into the face of a delighted and approving parent – joy unspeakable and full of glory! And it will impart to us a glorified form and brightness like the veiled face of Moses and like the brightness of stars or of precious stones – a true transformation analogous to that of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly!
So many people today can’t even believe the first principles of the Christian faith because they are held in chains by lies stemming from evolution. They are kept in the darkness of pseudo-science based on humanism and materialism, believing that nature – Mother Earth – is all there is. These people are caught up in the “wisdom of this world” and “the lies of the devil”.
Let us press on together to seek and serve the Lord – to carry His truth to all corners of the world. As always, we depend on you, our partners in ministry. This is why I ask once again that you seek the Lord for what He may prompt you to give this month. Thank you for helping us reach out to the lost with the life-transforming gospel of our Creator and Redeemer!
