A Lie Told Often - for the Revision of History
Viewpoint of Mark Cadwallader, Creation Moments Board Chairman
How very different is this quote about "truth" from William James, father of modern psychology:
"There is nothing so absurd but if you repeat it often enough people will believe it."
Bogus ideologies and revisionist histories have been adopted due to the force of this principle. And pseudo-sciences have risen to prominence from officially sanctioned and often-repeated lies. Repeat a mantra over and over, and people will believe it, whether it is true or not.
As an example, America's secularized justice system and revisionist history have led in our day to the current popular but incorrect view about "separation of church and state". This phrase is repeated over and over again to advance a false idea – that the U.S. Constitution prohibits religious activity in public facilities.
In reality, the phrase is not even in the Constitution at all! It's in a letter by Thomas Jefferson, written to assure the Baptists of Danbury, Connecticut, that the government would not interfere with their free exercise of religion because such "free exercise" was a God-given right, an "unalienable right" which the government could not usurp! By removing the phrase from its original context and repeating the mantra "separation of church and state", modern culture in America has reversed long-held notions of prayer in public schools, posting of the Ten Commandments, references to biblical morality and standards of righteousness, and school Christmas plays and nativity scenes – even changing terminology such as "Christmas Break" to "Winter Break".
We've spoken before of the relevance of George Orwell's classic novel 1984 in describing so much of what we confront in our world today. In the novel, the Ministry of Truth disseminated lies through the rewriting of history and then repeatedly proclaimed those lies in the press. God was expelled, and absolute truth was abolished. The Party slogan was: "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past."
Today, we see a similar situation throughout our culture's institutions – the media, education, the arts and the sciences – that secularists control the present, to rewrite the past, for purposes of controlling the future. And the key idea which allows them to do so is evolution – the foundation for secular humanism and the removal of God.
When you think about it, evolutionism is really another rewriting of history – the history of the Earth and the living things upon it. Evolution has been adopted and proclaimed as "science" essentially because its language, its claims and its just-so-stories have been repeated over and over. There is no real evidence for it, no record, and no eyewitnesses for it.
Contrast that with what the Bible has to say – with corroborated eyewitness testimony about Christ's resurrection and other historical events. The Bible account of a catastrophic worldwide flood has been rewritten to make room for the slow, invisible transformation over billions of years required by evolution. Yet, our experience of the historical record favors catastrophic change! Witness, for example, the quick and catastrophic changes that resulted from the volcanic explosion of Mount St. Helens in 1980. Indeed, the global transformative flood recorded in the Bible is corroborated by many cultural and tribal legends from all over the world.
When science strays from the evidence … when it makes dogmatic claims based on un-testable just-so-stories … when it censors other ideas and possibilities, it is no longer science. In fact, it discredits all science! And when such science is promoted, it leads to slip-shod thinking and foolishness.
Those of us who put the Bible ahead of such pseudo-science are protecting ourselves from foolishness. In fact, this is a great benefit for Bible-believing people. We are guided into wisdom, understanding and truth. As the Bible tells us, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105), and those who meditate on God's law rather than "sit in the seat of scoffers" will be blessed (Psalm 1).
As you remember the resurrection of Jesus Christ this Easter, we ask you to also remember that our culture is hard at work attempting to abolish the Creator. We need to shore up the foundation of Creation because many people won't even consider Christ and His resurrection until they recognize Him as the Creator.
Thanks to you and other friends of Creation Moments, we're doing just that! As a result, the Lord is empowering us to reach countless numbers of people with the truth of biblical creation and the gospel of Jesus Christ!
"When I first became a Christian, my new faith was shaken by the teachings of evolution. Thanks to Creation Moments, though, I learned that science and the Bible are compatible and that evolution is refuted by scientific evidence. I don't know what would have happened in my life had it not been for the materials I read from Creation Moments!" – S.S.
"I love Creation Moments. It is professional, fresh and awe-inspiring. At least once a week, my carpoolers get really quiet when I say... 'And now it's time for another Creation Moment', and I'll either share what was in the email or discuss God's Creation vs. evolution. They expect to hear truth. I'll continue to pray for this very important ministry." – S.A.
