Whatever happened to words like Wicked, Unrighteous and Immoral?
Viewpoint of Mark Cadwallader, Creation Moments Board Chairman
Wicked. Unrighteous. Immoral.
These are fast becoming outdated terms in our culture. Sophisticated people don’t use such words anymore.
But modern society forgets that righteousness is a very big deal with God. In fact, the Bible says He once destroyed “the world that then existed” through a great watery cataclysm because “the wickedness of man was great in the earth” (2 Peter 3:6, Genesis 6:5). God’s attitude toward sin is consistent throughout the Bible … and it’s brought home by creation science, since we proclaim the evidence for the great deluge of God’s judgment found throughout the geological record and all over the Earth.
No wonder that as evolution has become foundational to the sophisticated segments of society, words with moral connotation have become unpopular. Indeed, modern society pushes for increasing tolerance of immorality in the public square – and we are not supposed to use judgmental terminology. Moral decline is seen by many as the “evolution” of improved sensibilities.
The legacy of evolutionism is the revision of standards of morality – away from biblical injunctions and toward increased hedonism. Why should we follow biblical standards of morality when evolution teaches that the Bible is not true? Why should we even care about God’s standards when evolution teaches that God may not even exist?
And so today immorality is on the rise. People now believe that truth is relative. Teaching tolerance and condom use are just as important as grammar and geometry. “Alternative lifestyles” are “normal”. “Oneness with nature” is the important thing, so whatever we find in nature is normal and therefore acceptable.
Official belief is that nature creates itself through evolution, leaving mankind at the top of the ladder holding the key to his own future, with no external standard to judge his behavior.
But when we believe the Bible, we believe in God’s absolute standards of truth. Not only are we guided into truth – the truth that saves us and sets us free – but we are held to a moral standard which hones our conscience and works against moral decline.
Dan Ariely, Professor of Behavioral Economics at Duke University and MIT, has conducted experiments studying students’ tendency to cheat on tests and steal money. He gave them the opportunity to grade themselves on the tests with the reward of being able to keep small amounts of money depending on how many questions they answered correctly. He has studied a number of societal factors that go into the tendency to cheat and to steal, and he always gets a percentage of students who will cheat for the reward.
But sometimes he has asked the students to recall and write down as many of the Ten Commandments as they can before taking the tests … and in such cases no one cheated! It didn’t depend on how many of the Commandments they could recall, merely the fact that they were asked to try to remember them and were therefore reminded of God’s standards – moral standards beyond themselves.
Once again, the Bible is God’s inspired truth, and we benefit by believing it and applying it to our lives. Evolution is a terrible lie which undermines the knowledge of God in the hearts of people. At Creation Moments we understand this, and we work to help bring clarity and truth to millions of people around the world.
The preacher Jonathan Edwards gave a famous sermon titled “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” – terminology which would shock many modern sensibilities. However, the sermon was instrumental in ushering in the religious revival known as the Great Awakening in the middle of the 18th century – 100 years before Charles Darwin’s Origin of the Species.
Yet our post-Darwin world does not want to accept the reality of God’s wrath toward sin, and Edwards’ sermon would fall on deaf ears today. Our society does not want to accept the reality or even the terminology of “sin”. Even Professor Ariely’s conclusions about the effectiveness of the Ten Commandments in preventing cheating and stealing are couched in terms of “reminding people about their honor of themselves, their own standards” – not the spiritual reality of a Holy God who created mankind in His image. Such is the influence of naturalism and humanism, undergirded by evolution, in our world today.
Please help us at Creation Moments continue to proclaim and inform people about biblical truth – how it stands up even in the face of scientific inquiry, exposing evolution for the subversive lie that it is. Please give with your prayers as well as your gifts and offerings. Like little David against the mighty and intimidating Goliath, the battle and the victory is the Lord’s. But we depend on you!
