Today's Creation Moment

Were Dinosaurs Warm Blooded?
Psalm 147:2-3
"The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel. He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds."
Dinosaur fossil hunters and paleontologists have long debated whether dinosaurs were warm-blooded or cold-blooded. With reptile characteristics, it was expected that dinosaurs would be cold-blooded....

When faith comes first, understanding will follow!

I sat at my desk one day and literally cried out to the Lord to show me how to reconcile “all this science” with my new faith! I was a new Christian, working my first job out of college as a Research Chemist. And I had become greatly troubled after reading a long National Geographic article about the universe and how scientists understood its formation through evolutionary assumptions.

It was lunchtime, and as I cried out, I was suddenly reminded of a radio Bible teacher who had a 15-minute program which was about to start. So I went out to the parking lot and sat in my truck and listened. His teaching that day was about how, when we put faith first in the Christian life, understanding follows. It was the perfect answer to my distress. I decided to simply believe without having to first understand – and a wonderful sense of peace came over me! You know, in the weeks and months and years following that acceptance of the ways of the Lord, God gave me all the understanding I have needed to answer my questions – including having a Bible Science Newsletter “mysteriously” show up on my apartment doorstep one day! We don’t need to be intimidated by secular science, much of which is false philosophy, as you and other creationists know.

In modern culture we are trained to base our understanding on evidence and data. We must see it – prove it, to then believe it. And there is certainly considerable value in doing this – the Scientific Method. Indeed, we have previously discussed how the Scientific Method grew out of a Christian worldview and thus arose in Western Culture instead of the Far East, where nature-based and pantheist religions were dominant. It did so because the God of the Bible is a law-giving, principle-giving Creator who established an order to His creation. Reasonable men in Christian cultures, therefore, figured that the created order could be found out through hypothesis and testing. Many philosophers have recognized this.

Yet, the biblical basis for understanding is to actually put faith first. For example, “ faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God...” (Hebrews 11:3). Note that the word “understand” follows “faith”. Faith is first.

It is intriguing because it is seemingly illogical to realize that a certain spiritual clarity and understanding follows faith. Though many people think that “seeing is believing”, the Bible teaches that “believing is seeing” – that a deep sense of understanding follows the act of believing. And so, “The just shall live by faith” (Habakkuk 2:4, Hebrews 10:38, Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11).
The Bible presents a tremendous amount of truth. And God is certainly a Super-Rational Author, Designer and Builder of incredible logic and order. But He transcends His material creation and exists in His original spiritual reality. This is where we really meet and know Him. The marvel of creation offers us a glimpse into the majesty, beauty, character and spiritual reality of our Maker. But we must open our spiritual eyes and ears to really discern Him.

In writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul prays for them that “…the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that you may know …what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe” (Ephesians 1:17-19). Notice, there is an opening of our spiritual eyes that follows faith. Clarity, wisdom, insight – these are some of the many blessings that come out of a life of Christian faith.
One of the big problems in a secular humanistic culture dominated by materialism and evolutionism is that not only does it seek to lie about biblical and creation truth, and to ridicule those who believe, but it supports a constant barrage of propaganda against the spiritual life. Yet, as we’ve discussed in my previous letters, modern science is actually pointing more and more to the reality of spirituality!

Certainly the world, the flesh, and the devil – the three realms of evil that we must deal with in this life – want to keep people from stepping out and growing in a life of faith. And thus we are bombarded by the propaganda of evolution which seeks to shipwreck biblical faith. This is why we need to keep countering the lies with truth! And there is an overwhelming amount of evidence for the biblical record, though the world may try to sweep it away.

In Psalm 27:13 we read, “I had fainted (despaired) unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” We must remember that God is good, and He has a purpose that is thoroughly good! At Creation Moments, we rejoice in His goodness toward us. We see increasing opportunity and fruit for His Kingdom at every hand – even as we have weathered the storms of life and ministry! God has purpose and methods that are beyond our capacity to see and to understand completely. So that is why we must step out in faith first, believing that whatever need we have to understand will follow sooner or later – just as it did for me after I sat in my truck in the parking lot at lunchtime those many years ago.

And if we are people who have trouble understanding God’s goodness and love toward us as His children, it should be helpful to simply say, “Okay, I believe it, and I will just rest in that biblical truth!” And then a deep understanding, that may well be inarticulate, will develop. That’s what the Bible teaches. That’s how it works.

Indeed, our faith in the trustworthiness of God’s Word is the first step in believing what the Bible says about origins. A greater understanding of biblical creation then follows as we look at the many lines of scientific support for biblical creation. Equipping believers with evidence that Jesus is both our Creator and Savior has been the mission of Creation Moments for the past 53 years. With God’s blessing and the support of people like you, it’s what we intend to keep on doing until the glorious day that Jesus returns.
