Grand Canyon, Grand Deception

Today's guest blogger is Dick Rothermel, a long-time friend of Creation Moments who writes in response to a Creation Moment program that aired last week. Dick, the floor is yours …

Grand CanyonWhen scientists remove the blinders of evolution and millions of years, they find evidence staring us all in the face that fully corroborates the biblical record. It's always been there, but people still try to suppress it. Witness the veteran Grand Canyon guide who rejected evolution and wrote a book showing that the Canyon very likely formed in a short period of time. Tom Vail's book – when it was first published – was banned in Grand Canyon bookstores.
Other scientists have shown that the Grand Canyon very likely formed rapidly as an immense lake – dubbed "Grand Lake" – burst its (ice) dams when the earth warmed and melted the glacial ice. According to this plausible theory, the waters behind the ice dam – as large as the Great Lakes – burst forth catastrophically and dug the canyon rapidly. Similar phenomena were observed in the aftermath of the Mount St. Helens catastrophe in the early 1980s. The surrounding area has become a laboratory for studying earth history.
It is no coincidence that the modern creationist movement was launched by Dr. Henry Morris, a hydraulic engineer who published The Genesis Flood. His professional training taught him just how powerful H2O is!
The Apostle Peter predicted that scoffers would come in the last days, scoffing and deliberately ignoring the fact that the earth was formed out of water, by means of water, and that the earth was deluged in the great Global Flood of Noah's day (2 Peter, chapter 3).
We are continually astonished at the utter devastation caused by unstoppable, rushing floodwaters in news reports. Multiply those effects by an incredible amount of rushing water in the great Flood and its earth-changing aftermath, and you can see how the notion of millions of years of slow erosion just doesn't hold water!

Note from Creation Moments: Tom Vail's book – Grand Canyon – a Different View – is available from the Creation Moments online bookstore. This beautiful book includes contributions from more than 20 well-known creationist authors.

Great Post this morning. The Grand Canyon displays the greatest evidence for a young Earth. If you can't visit the canyon in person, Tom's book is the next best thing.

Dropped by based on a friend's suggestion and thus haven't read the book yet. How does he handle the strata within the canyon?

Grand Canyon A Different View has contributions from twenty-three creationists, such as Steve Austin, John Baumgardner, Ken Ham, Henry Morris, Terry Mortenson, Gary Parker, and Andrew Snelling.

Tasman Walker addresses the rock layers and includes a Geologic time chart. He compares creation, pre-flood, flood, and post flood rock layers with the evolutionary time table. The individual layers are named in the book, but I don't have room to list them here.

I was viewing the webcam at Grand Canyon at work the other day when a customer commented about it having been formed by the river. I immediately explained its probable true origin, and he seemed interested in my answer - the breached dam from the flood/ice age. Another customer just looked at me in disbelief and kept his mouth shut. Guess he wasn't prepared to answer my convincing reply. To God be the glory.

That is so very true! Many years ago, when I first became fascinated with the awe and beauty of the Grand Canyon, I became aware of how improbable it was that the Colorado River formed it. It just didn't make any sense. The Biblical account makes perfect sense in explaining many scientific things! Keep up the great work, and let's prove the evolutionists, and other deluded scientists wrong!

Stunning display of God's handiwork via the flood.

All the evidence points to a catastrophic event forming the Grand Canyon. If all that soil had really been moved slowly and steadily, while the river carved the canyon, there should be a massive river delta where the Colorado River enters the Gulf. But there isn't.

The whole premise that sedimentary layers are laid down at a steady, predictable rate is a figment of the imagination. Estimates of age based on this kind of assumption are in error.

Anyone who's lived by a river knows how quickly the river can change the landscape. Estimates of "millions" of years are just an effort to avoid the facts: (1) it doesn't actually take very long for erosion processes to occur and (2) cataclysmic events commonly cause upheaval in the earth.

The earth is only about 6,000 years in age. Any reasonable person can see the evidence of this fact. It takes someone who wants to deny history and science to interpret the evidence with an evolutionary bias that allows for nonexistent stretches of time that span millions of years.

The Kaibab Plateau challenges the assumption that the canyon was carved slowly by the river. The Colorado River flows southward into northern Arizona along the east side of the Kaibab Plateau. Why would it suddenly turn right and flow through the high Kaibab Plateau? A river isn't going to flow uphill.

There are plenty of theories that try to explain this away — all untestable, of course. Basically, scientists who are interested in misinterpreting data to support evolutionism are loath to admit they are wrong and will come up with any number of suppositions to avoid the truth. But evidence shows a catastrophic event formed the canyon, not slow erosion.

Honest scientific inquiry will always agree with the Bible. The Grand Canyon is a majestic testament to the reality of a global Flood.

I heard a talk from Rick Oliver at the Red River Bible and Prophecy Conference 2009. He is now a creation scientist and was at Mount St. Helens when it erupted. That event is what convinced him that the Grand Canyon was formed quickly, in similar fashion. He likened the rapid changes that he witnessed at Mount St. Helens to how the Grand Canyon was formed as a result of the flood. Being at Mount St. Helens and witnessing that catastrophic disaster is what convinced him finally that evolution simply cannot be, and that the earth is young and that God is real. I agree. God bless!
