How do we account for the millions of years that “science” says can be measured? We don’t in this study. Scientific questions need scientific answers. Theologically, we account for them by unbelief. Those who want a different age of the world don’t accept God’s Word. Their ideas of how the world came into being may seem to require long ages, but it is also obvious that if they accepted that the world was as young as the Bible says it is, then they would have no reason to question the creation account. Read Hebrews 11:1-12 and then read Romans 1:18-21. How is the principle that rejection of the truth, especially before you even start your search for it, results in being unable to find the truth evident among evolutionists?

The assertion that the world is millions or billions of years old is not a statement of scientific fact, or the result of the interpretation of scientific data. It is the bold assertion that the Bible is wrong. Those who try to accommodate the “scientific” age of the earth in their Biblical interpretations are surrendering to the judgment of error in Scripture, and to the unbeliever’s claim that the Bible is man’s word about his own understanding of God, and not God’s Word about man and salvation. Read Hebrews 10:23-25. Here is where the superiority of the biblical faith over the evolutionary faith touches everyday life. How many points of superiority of the biblical faith over evolution can you name based on this text? Which other texts can you think of which will add to your list?

This is where the whole issue rests. Jesus Christ came in fulfillment of promises made to Adam and Eve, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to others throughout the Scriptures. He came and fulfilled the prophecies made throughout Scripture. But if the Bible is wrong, and it is nothing more than man’s words, then the promises are uncertain and questionable. The prophecies are man’s ramblings and maybe a psychedelic dream, and not God’s assurances and sure identification of His Messiah. The whole is thrown into monstrous doubt, and we are left with no sure word, no certain salvation. Heroic faith becomes foolish credulity; the desire to believe rather than a Spirit-worked confidence in the redemption worked by God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

That is the agenda. We are witnesses to a monumental battle. They assault Christ, the Creating Word made flesh for our salvation. They do it by assaulting the Word Inscripturated (written down). They attack the Word of our Lord. The Bible clearly gives us the age of the world, roughly six thousand years old. So-called scientists give us their estimates, 4 billion years old. Faith clings to the Word.

To find the age of the universe, simply start at the beginning of the first study and read through it again, changing the words “world” and “earth” into “universe.” Genesis 1:1 says that in the beginning God created “the heavens and the earth.” The heavens are what scientists now refer to as the universe.

Close this study with prayer. Seek the blessing of the Holy Spirit on your faith, that you may cling to his Word in the face of the attacks of the unbelieving world. Thank God that he has left so great a witness to Himself as our Bible. End with a discussion on how you may serve the Lord in this battle, and be more than witnesses, but participants and warriors in this earth-shaking battle for the Word of God. “That I may by all means save some. I do all things for the sake of the gospel.” 1 Corinthians 9:22-23.
